The rushcart is drawn through the streets by the Bacup Britannia Coconut Dancers, unique 'Morrismen'. Originally the cart was taken to the Parish Church, the rushes being strewn on the floor to provide a 'pleasanter' floor covering. There was often a small boy precariously placed boy on top of the rushcart. He needed to be 'sober of mind and thought' - hence the term being on the waggon - implying not drinking alcohol.
