Rochdale, Rushcart with boy on the top

The rushcart is drawn through the streets of Rochdale by Morrismen. Originally it was taken to the Parish Church, the rushes being strewn on the floor to provide a 'pleasanter' floor covering. Notice the boy on top of the rushcart. He needed to be 'sober of mind and thought' - hence the term being on the waggon - implying not drinking alcohol.
