HRS 3601 Bolton, Smithills Hall, Footprint of George Marsh c1970
The hall dates back to the 15th century with later additions. There is an open hall. Smithills is famous for its association with the Protestant martyr George Marsh. When examined there about his Faith in 1555 he stamped his foot on the flagstone floor and prayed that there might be a sign for all to see. The flagstone has an unusual patch a little like a foot, but is in fact a well-known geological feature. Marsh remained true to his Faith until the very end when he was burnt at the stake in Chester.
