Walking Days, Whitsuntide Processions and Festivals were once common across the North West of England. The horse-drawn wagon in the centre appears (best guess) to represent rush-bearing where rushes were collected on a cart and strewn on the floor of the local church. This could of course be completely wrong and if you know what the cart does please let us know! Please contact Wigan Archives Service for more information at http://wiganimages.wlct.org/contact_us/
