The inscription reads "Co-operative Society's 1st shop, In the garret, corner of Sugar Street and Newton Street."
"View of Newton Street, Leigh, where Leigh Co-operative Society's first shop was situated. T(Leigh Friendly Co-operative Society) he shop was in the garret, or small loft, of the house on the corner of Sugar Street and Newton Street. The old Savings Bank can be seen in the foreground on the right. The obelisk and opening to Market Place are in the background"
