Radcliffe was a town of many industries during the 19th and 20th centuries. There was paper-making, dyeing, bleaching, finishing, weaving, spinning - all of which needed machinery. Radcliffe very much in the orbit of the Manchester engineering revolution had many heavy engineering companies.
