Brymbo works started as an iron works founded by the great ironmaster John Wilkinson who was involved in the production of iron at Backbarrow in Cumbria. He also owned Bersham. The works has had various owners and was managed for a while by relatives of Abraham Darby of Coalbrookdale. (1841)
The works eventually turned to the production of steel using the then revolutionary process of open hearth furnaces. (1885) Production ended in the 1990s, the site largely being reclaimed for housing, although several original features still exist.
