Alston is a small but attractive market town in Cumbria. The town has amazing buildings and survivals, it is situated in a remote area of the Northern Pennines at over 1000 feet above sea level. It is important in the story of John Smeaton the famous 18th century engineer who installed a waterwheel in th town and was associated with mining activity.
The area was also extensively mined probably from Roman times for lead and other minerals. (See also Metal and Mineral Mining, Nenthead mining area.)
