The woodland industry of South Cumbria has been substantial in the past. The woodland was heavily coppiced and used for a variety of purposes from charcoal (for gunpowder and iron smelting), through to bobbin-making and other timber products. A privately owned estate mill still survives in South Cumbria with its Gilkes water turbine, bobbin-turning machines, line-shafting and other features. The owner wishes to retain his privacy and we are extremely grateful to him for allowing us to photograph the mill as a public record. KH
