HRS 1883 Thrutch tunnel, Waterfoot

The narrow valley known as "The Thrutch" between Waterfoot and Bacup presented a significant problem for the East Lancashire Railway Engineers. The proble was solved with the construction of a short eliptical-shaped tunnel in 1859 alongside the narrow gorge. PHOTO: The view from the tunnel looks towards the former Waterfoot Station.
