HRS 4378 East Lancashire Railway, Cutting towards Outwood catch points 1969
Catch-points were a system of preventing a runaway wagon from careering down the gradient and colliding with a following train. The wagons were simply derailed. In the photo they were derailed towards the photographer. Bearing in mind the early date of the East Lancashire Railway they may well be an original siting, although of course they could have been installed later by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway.
