"Leading a large load of slate down the 'trod' from Saddlestone Bank, Old Man quarries. The sled [or sledge] increases the load capacity and acts as a brake to prevent the cart overwhelming the pony. The 'trod' was surfaced with slate quarry bottoms to give a smooth run." Ruskin Museum.
