A series of images from the personal collection of Ron Mein who was brought up in the Backbarrow and Leven Valley area of Cumbria. The area is signficant in the history of science and technology because of its association with ironmaster John Wilkinson and iron smelting, gunpowder manufacture, charcoal burning, potash burning and the famous 'Blue Works' where ultramarine was manufactured.
