The photograph shows the Cartmel Arch or Gatehouse probably in the early 1950s. Coming through the arch is a horse-drawn cart loaded with hay, notice the man perched on top. To the right of the 'town cross' are the so-called fish-slabs where local fishermen once sold their wares. In between the man with bicycle and the stone column is a case, presumably belogning to Joseph Hardman, the photographer.
