HRS 489 Carding engine Holden Haworth Darwen 1980s

Lancashire textile industry. Carding is one of the dirtiest and most dusty of the cotton preparation processes. The rough cotton is 'combed' within the machine by 1000s of sharp wire pins (under the top cover of the machine) before being mechanically lifted from the machine (on the right of the picture) to produce what is called a slivver ready for the next stage prior to eventually being woven.
