The delightful villages of Ravenstonedale and Newbiggin-on-Lune lie to the north the Howgills in Cumbria. Both villages are in 'limestone country' and confusingly, are in the Yorkshire Dales National Park whilst remaining in Cumbria. Smardale is a National Nature Reserve in the care of Cumbria Wildlife Trust and features a magnificent viaduct amongst its other sites.
The area also has outstanding archaeological remains of field systems dating to the Bronze Age.
