HRS 550 MBBC Mount Sion creek c1972 looking North

Before the canal was built in the 1790s small stream ran down (towards the viewer) from the higher land in the north to the river Irwell. The small valley was dammed. There is some uncertainly as to whether it was dammed to supply water to the nearby Mount Sion bleach works or, as seems more likely in the first instance to provide emergency water for the summit level of the canal in the event of a leak.
