Photo taken on a dull winter's day from the cab of a Manchester to Bury electric train of the approach to Withins Bridge, Radcliffe. The Manchester to Bury Electric service used a 1200 V DC 3rd rail side contact system. Notice the Jarrah wood trough centre picture protecting the live 3rd rail DC system. The line leading away to the left was part of the Bury to Bolton Branch line. A short section of the track was retained as the emergency battery back-up and DC conversion plant was housed in a building close by and used the track to supply current to the Manchester to Bury DC trains when the power went off.
