HRS 1467 Glasshouse Fold accident Denton 1910

Glasshouse Fold is in Denton, Greater Manchester. In 1910 two children were playing when the earth gave way beneath their feet and fell down a disused coalmine shaft. By quirk of fate they were saved by a steel plate that was blocking the 675 feet deep shaft. They clung on the plate all night unaware that a huge search was underway for them. Then in the morning they heard a noise and shouted. The hole they had made was so small that it had been missed during the search. The police came and a basket was lowered down on a rope and they were hoisted to the surface. The event made world news and the two children received presents from all over the globe.
