These gate posts or stoops are thought to be cast-iron cylinders used as retort vessels probably from the 1840s by Sabden Print Works in its factory a few hundred yards away. The 1st edition Ordnance Survey Map clearly shows the print works and its retort house and gasometer. See also under Stonyhurst College for similar photos of retorts dating back to 1811. KH
