HRS 1283 Bury, Wikes Woollen Mill, Tentering 1979

The expression 'on tenterhooks' meaning being on edge and very concerned or apprehensive, is well-illustrated in this photo. It is all to easy to be stabbed by the sharp tenter-hooks, the worker said he always pinned the woollen cloth with his back to it because it was safer and he got fewer cuts. Plus of course the front of his body is well away from the sharp tenter-hooks.
