In 1752 James Brindley the famous canal builder built an inverted syphon under the River Irwell near Clifton in Lancashire. The water was carried under the river and eventually operated a waterwheel-pump to drain water from the appropriately named Wet Earth Colliery. The story is told in AG Banks & RB Schofield Book 'Brindley at Wet Earth Colliery' David and Charles 1968.
A great deal still remained at that time, but now remains are becoming difficult if not impossible to see. The photos shows some of the surface features.
