A rare photo of a moonbow over Conwy Mountain. Moonbows are unusual and often occur at night - as in this case. Everyone is familiar with rainbows occurring during the day. Moonbows are much rarer and occur on bright moonlight nights or early evening like this one in Conwy North Wales photographed 11th January 2009. The spectrum can be caused by a distant rain shower but more often than not the light is affected by minute ice crystals producing the phenomenon. The light source is always behind the observer. KH
