Extreme left is Robert Stephenson's tubular railway bridge of 1850, a precursor for the Britannia Bridge across the Menai Straits on to Anglesey. Designed by William Fairbairn it was constructed of wrought-iron, opening in 1849. Centre of the picture is Thomas Telford's suspension bridge of 1826, one of the first road suspension bridges in the world. Edward I Conwy castle is seen in the background, and the modern road bridge (1970) is on the right.
