HRS 429 Conwy suspension bridge from East portal

Centre and right of the picture is Thomas Telford's suspension bridge of 1826, one of the first road suspension bridges in the world. On the left is Robert Stepenson's tubular railway bridge of 1850, a precursor for the Brittania Bridge across the Menai Straits on to Anglesey. Designed by William Fairbairn it was constructed of wrought iron opening in 1849. Edward I Conwy castle is seen in the background.
