HRS 1781 Haig Pit canary cage

A canary cage. Canaries were used extensively underground to detect poisonous gases. They were extremely 'sensitive' to gases and would collapse from their perch long before the noxious gas could be detected by other means. The canaries soon recovered on being returned to the surface.
