Five-bar watergate dog Sep 1989

A quarry near Stephenson Ground worked for its unusual hexagonal-shaped pieces of rock. Geologically it is known as an ignimbrite a volcanic ash so hot it moulded and welded together, if the cooling conditions were such that it could cool slowly hexagonal columns were produced - an ideal material for local farmers building dry stone walls. In this case a water-gate or smout.
