Dr Johnson author of the famous dictionary (1755) often visited Gwaenynog Hall on the river (Afon Ystrad). It is likely the cottage was used when fishing or simply relaxing, rather than for long-term occupancy. There is a monument to Johnson nearby. Beatrix Potter also visited the area as her uncle owned Gwaenynog Hall.
