HRS 1891 Radcliffe, Withins, electric train to Bury c1974
A Manchester to Bury 3rd rail electric train approaches Withins bridge in Radcliffe c1974. The train has just descended the bank to its left near the signal box. The original East Lancashire Railway ran in a straight line into the distance beyond the train. On the extreme right of the picture is a brick-built building a 'sun-station' for the electric service. It has a large number of lead acid batteries as well as rotary converters to supply the service in the event of a power-cut. The Manchester to Bury Electric service used a 1200 V DC 3rd rail side contact system. Photo is taken looking due west towards Radcliffe.
